🚨 The Tax Bill You Didn’t Know Was Coming Around 1.8 million people are expected to receive an HMRC “Simple Assessment” letter, with many potentially receiving one for the first time. So, what should you do if one lands on your doorstep? A Simple Assessment is HMRC’s way of collecting tax from people who aren’t in Self Assessment and don’t have all their tax dealt with through PAYE. The important thing is not to simply assume the figures are correct. HMRC calculates the assessment using the information it holds, but this information can sometimes be incomplete or incorrect. It’s worth checking the income and allowances against your own records before making payment. If you believe something is wrong, you generally have 60 days to challenge the assessment. If you’ve received a Simple Assessment letter and aren’t sure what it means, RMHO Consulting can review it with you and help identify whether anything needs to be challenged. 📩 Get in touch with our team if you’d like a second pair of eyes on your assessment. #RMHOConsulting #HMRC #TaxAdvice #SimpleAssessment #UKTax #Accounting #TaxPlanning

HMRC Is Stepping Up Crypto Tax Compliance Since 1 January 2026, UK cryptoasset exchanges and other reporting cryptoasset service providers have been required to collect information about customers and their crypto transactions under the Cryptoasset Reporting Framework \(CARF\). This information can be reported to HMRC, giving HMRC greater visibility of crypto activity. To prove that this is the case, HMRC has recently sent more than 80,000 "nudge letters" to individuals it believes has crypto gains to report. This will no doubt be followed by more letters and heightened compliance activities in the months ahead. For individuals, crypto tax can arise in a number of situations. Selling crypto, exchanging one token for another, or using crypto to purchase goods or services can potentially constitute a disposal for Capital Gains Tax purposes. Importantly, losses matter too. Keeping accurate records of purchases, disposals, fees and valuations is essential when calculating your overall gains or losses. For businesses operating in crypto, digital assets and blockchain, the tax position can be more complex, with Corporation Tax, Income Tax, CGT and other taxes potentially relevant depending on the activities involved. The message is simple: crypto may be digital, but your tax obligations are very real. If you have crypto transactions that you need help understanding or reporting to HMRC, RMHO Consulting can help.
